Old West Meets Future in HBO Original Series

Imagine entering a world where you leave your identity behind. A world where you can be whoever you want, kill whoever you want and be with whoever you want. A world where there are no consequences for your actions because everything begins again the next day.

In HBO’s original series “Westworld,” creators Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan bring this exact situation to life, allowing viewers to witness all of the terrifying psychological effects and technological advances that come with it.

This sci-fi drama, based on the 1973 film of the same name directed by Michael Crichton, is set in a futuristic Western theme park populated by robots, known as hosts, who are indiscernible from humans. Wealthy people of all ages and genders flock to the park to escape the stress of their everyday lives and fulfill their deepest desires, whether that be as a hero, villain or something in between.

Guests select story lines to follow during their stays and are allowed to do anything they choose to the hosts that accompany them, including kill them, but both guests and hosts are unable to mortally wound another guest. While guests continue on with their stories, hosts’ memories are erased nightly, and they are returned to their original position where they wait until morning to entertain another guest.

“Westworld” dives into the human mind as guests carry out their twisted fantasies throughout their stay in the park. Humans kill and rape hosts merely because they are allowed to do so without repercussion. Their treatment of the hosts is inhumane and shows exactly what humans are capable of when they are put in the right, or wrong, environment.

“Westworld” also addresses the problems that can result from extreme technological advances. The creators address the inevitable and terrifying issues that will result when the artificial intelligence we create truly takes on a mind of its own and learns to think for itself.

The unique plot of this fast-paced series is captivating, suspenseful, and, at times, humorous. It manages to tastefully combine brutal killings with tender love stories and sci-fi themes, creating a wide genre that makes it a hit show for people of all interests.

“Westworld” is a thrilling and mind-bending series that keeps viewers entertained for the duration of each hour-long episode and leaves them wondering how close these parks are to becoming a reality.
