Hobby Lobby’s Initial COVID-19 Response Reveals Company’s True, Terrible Ethics

From a company that prides itself on its Christian morals, one would expect Hobby Lobby to hold the values that Jesus did—His greatest commandment, of course, was to love.

But the way that the company treats its employees is nothing short of contempt masked under a thin veil of so-called Christian compassion.

David Green, Hobby Lobby’s CEO, initially decided to keep open more than 90 of the non-essential craft stores nationwide despite the COVID-19 pandemic, according to Business Insider, exposing his barely-living-wage employees and everyone with whom they interacted to a deadly virus.

The company rescinded that decision on April 4 after social media outcry and reproach from government officials enforcing stay-at-home and shelter-in-place orders. But Hobby Lobby’s initial refusal to comply with the regulations that would save lives—a direct contradiction to its pro-life beliefs—speaks volumes.

Green’s justification for attempting to keep Hobby Lobby’s stores open? God told his wife that the company should do so in a “vision,” according to a letter he wrote to his employees that Business Insider accessed.

“We serve a God who will Guide us through this storm, who will Guard us as we travel to places never seen before, and who, as a result of this experience, will Groom us to be better than we could have ever thought possible before now,” Green wrote.

That might be so, but Philippians 2:4 instructs Christians to first consider the interests of others before those of ourselves. And deliberately endangering your employees so that you can continue to profit exemplifies selfishness. Green’s net worth is $7.2 billion, according to Forbes, yet he insisted upon losing not a single penny in revenue to store closures that save lives.

Imagine what could have happened had Green’s hand not been forced.

Should Green’s employees have become infected with the virus to which he forced their exposure, most of them do not have paid sick leave. Only salaried workers, Business Insider reported, have that benefit, so hourly workers would have been forced to face the possibility of fighting COVID-19 without income and with questionable job security.

And Hobby Lobby dares to play “Amazing Grace” in its stores.

With every dollar you spend at this diabolical corporation, you contribute to its greedy assault on Christian values. I promise you: that chintzy ceramic cow is not worth it.
