Introducing EHS’ Most Recent Club: Yacht Club

The newest of more than 75 clubs at EHS requires only six meetings a year, constructing card board and duct tape boats, and having a whole lot of fun.

The newest club at EHS, Yacht Club, was recently started by junior Regan Windau and already has more than 50 members. But what does the club do?

During club meetings students divide into two separate teams. Through the course of the year, the students will be working on constructing card board and duct tape boats, and will race them at the Chuck Fruit Aquatic Center the last meeting of the year.

“One of my favorite things to do is go boating in the summer and I was thinking about how I could do something similar to that during the school year,” Windau said. “Even though it’s not exactly boating, it was something I thought was fun and new.”

A junior club counselor, Brennan Tolle, said that the competition and hands on work Yacht Club requires is exciting.

The club also has a flexible six meeting per year schedule, with the second meeting being next Wednesday, and joining the club doesn’t take much of a commitment from students to be a part of.

“I wanted to start a club that would be available for kids who were super busy with activities outside of school and also fun to be a part of,” Windau said.

Time is a huge deal for high school students. Some have to balance between their schoolwork, jobs, and other activities. Yacht club only has six meetings a year, making it an easy club to manage.

“The small amount of meetings made (the club) much more convenient,” junior Yacht Club member Ben Patterson said.

Dustin Battas, the teacher sponsor of Yacht Club said that it is a great opportunity for students.

“I think it gives (students) a chance to be involved at our school,” Battas said. “They will have a chance to meet new people, make friends and the projects involved will be really hands on.”
