Edwardsville Gets Crazy for Drama

Every year Edwardsville citizens, students and parents alike, line up and pile in to see EHS’s renowned spring musical. The acts never disappoint and the essence of talent rushes off stage as each musical protégé shines under the spotlight. Their dancing, their singing and their ability to pull the audience in right from the start is just part of the appeal, and this year they’re ramping up their game.

When banker and lover of showbiz Bobby Child finds out he can escape the grips of his impatient fiancé to close the deal on a foreclosure in Deadrock, Nevada, he takes off and doesn’t stop until he runs into the beautiful Polly Baker, whose dad owns the theater Bobby plans to close down. Through many dance numbers and songs, Polly quickly steals the banker’s heart and he is left to find a way to save her father’s theater.

With a witty book written by Ken Ludwig and music/lyrics by George and Ira Gershwin, the hypnotic humor is sure to set in as the lights dim down and students take the stage.

One student is senior Ali Meehan who is playing the lead female role: Polly Baker.

“Polly is an extremely confident and independent woman,” Meehan said. “She’s definitely not afraid to speak her mind about any situation, (but) in the end, she’s a romantic at heart.”

And as all best romantic scenes go, there are certainly fast-paced dance numbers to heat the flame as love takes its toll, but some students have been struggling to dominate their dancing shoes.

“We are using most of the Broadway choreography,” sophomore Molly Stout said, “and it’s hard to stay in character and focus on that at the same time. But it is also the most fun part.”

But where there are quick tap numbers, there are also touching dialogues.

“I think of (the show) like a roller coaster,” junior Neal Bozark said. “The speed picks up incredibly so at some points, but at others it feels a bit slow. I don’t mind the slower pace, however, because it’s usually there to give the characters more depth.”

Unfortunately, this roller coaster will be coming to an end soon enough.

“Crazy for You” will be performed on May 31 and April 1 at 7:30 p.m., and the closing show will be on April 2 at 2 p.m. Tickets will go on sale on March 17 and tickets will continue to be sold unless they quickly sell out before show time.

“I think that if people have never experienced an EHS Drama club show, they should definitely come experience this one,” Meehan said. “‘Crazy for You’ is like no other.”
