Spring What?

It’s that time of the year again: the birds are coming back to  sing their lovely songs in the mornings, the beautiful flowers of spring are beginning to bloom and students nationwide will be taking a break from school to descend on the beaches and experience cruises. Oh, the joys of spring break.

Too bad I have never gotten experience these break activities.

I, along with my fellow spring sport athletes, am far too busy to partake in this “break”. It is just the sacrifice we make to play the sports that we love.

“It would be nice to go somewhere exciting so that I have a great story to tell once break is over,” senior Allison Loehr said. “The only thing I can talk about is practice.”

Though some would see this as negative, I say who needs those outrageous stories to have fun.  Besides, just because we don’t actually go on vacation doesn’t mean we don’t enjoy the perks.

“I get sunburnt like I was at the beach all day,” junior Jasmine Bishop said. “And if I go to the [long] jump pit I can play in the sand.”

We like to make the best out the situation. Winter athletes give up winter break and summer athletes barely get to experience their vacation.

“We get to sleep in,” Bishop said. “That has to count for something right.”

Even if coach decides to give us that week off, many of us would just be lost. The boys track and field team for example has Monday through Wednesday off for break.

“This is the first time I’ve ever had a spring break, coach just felt like being nice this year,” senior Tariq Minor said about the boys track team getting the entire week off. “But I don’t know what to do with my time so I might as well just practice anyway.”

Missing break to train and compete isn’t such a bad deal. It’s perfect team bonding time, and there is plenty to do around here that could be break-story worthy.
