Ouija Leaves the Crowd Shaken But Not Stirred

The whole idea of spirits, possession and other horror-themed situations is a continuous controversy. One thing that really spikes debate is a Ouija board. We’ve all heard of that. It’s a board with the alphabet engraved into the wood that is used to “contact the dead.”

Recently, the movie “Ouija” premiered in theatres. If you aren’t someone who is attracted to scary movies, you probably didn’t even think of going to see it. But if you do enjoy them, you most likely attended and thought, “This is what I paid 10 dollars for?”

The main idea is that Debbie, a girl who found a Ouija board became possessed and hung herself. Her friends, of course, wanted a chance to talk to her and say their goodbyes, so what did they do? They found Debbie’s Ouija board and tried to contact her. I won’t give away the rest of the movie, but it surely isn’t something to get enthused about.

While the film did take on the role of suspense, it wasn’t very thrilling. It revealed a few cliché scares, but nothing very shocking occurred. A loud noise caused the audience to jump, but oh, it’s just a character’s friend behind the door, nothing to worry about. An unknown figure with their back facing the unsuspecting human? Of course it’s just a scary creature ready to eat their face off. With an extremely predictable plot, it was generally a waste of money.

You could hear the crowd’s sarcastic screams and laughs as the film progressed. Of course there were a few people in the audience who were actually scared, and all you could do was assume that they haven’t seen many scary movies.

If a movie was truly a good scare, you should be able to randomly think of a scary scene at the wrong time- while you’re trying to fall asleep at night, for example. That’s when all the scary movies you’ve ever seen pop into your head. I forgot about the entire plot of Ouija right after leaving the theatre.

As the people were filing out of the theater, disappointed sighs were heard throughout the crowd. If you’re looking for a good film to see with some friends for a movie night, I highly advise you to not choose Ouija.
