Student Council’s Beauty Week to Return

The Post-It notes will be stuck on the windows, inspiration will be written on the mirrors and the Ping-Pong tournament will be back for another year of competition. Beauty Week will return Jan. 23-27 after its successful first year in 2016 and Student Council hopes to keep the momentum this year.

“We really wanted to recapture all of the positivity and success of each day and its events,” said junior Anna Hicks, a member of Student Council and part of the Beauty Week committee. “… with inner beauty comes confidence, and we want to promote a positive self image.”

According to Hicks, the committee decided on the week’s events by considering the effects of last year’s Beauty Week. Events such as the inspirational window Post-Its and the Ping-Pong tournament are events that returned this year and according to senior and Student Council President Mary Webb, they removed inspirational clothes pins from the Beauty Week lineup and added inspirational name tags instead.

“I think it’ll go really well,” Webb said. “It’s such a positive week so I think people that would usually critical of these events don’t have anything to complain about.”

Beauty Week began a couple years ago when a student approached Student Council with the idea, Webb said. They finally implemented it last year.

“(Last year,) I felt like the school had a more positive atmosphere than usual,” said senior Jessica Peters, who enjoyed Beauty Week’s first run last year. “We could give compliments, and take time to view other people’s beauty, which is not very common nowadays.”

Peters anticipates more positive energy will result from this year.

“I hope this year goes even better than last year,” she said. “I hope that we can take time as a student body to look beyond ourselves and see the qualities in others past what we see on the outside.

“Beauty Week could help break stigmas and grow healthy friendships this year.”
