Netflix Starts the New Year Off With a Bang

Netflix decided not to hold back this January when it revealed an extensive to-be-released list of classics, comedies and original TV shows to its queue to welcome 2017.

As soon as the ball dropped last Sunday, 30 new films arrived to Netflix’s website. As if 30 more movies to watch weren’t enough, 60 more are scheduled to come out within the month. “E.T. the Extra Terrestrial,” “The Shining” and the original four “Superman” films are just a few flicks to anticipate this month.

Senior Riley Coad is ecstatic about Netflix’s transformation of her favorite childhood book series “A Series of Unfortunate Events” into a live-action TV show which will be released on Jan. 13.

“The set and costumes look amazing from what I’ve seen so far, and I’m definitely excited for the acting– especially since Neil Patrick Harris is playing the villain,” Coad said.

Coad hopes that Netflix will do the books justice by staying as true to the theme and characters as possible.

“I want to get a sense of nostalgia when I watch it,” Coad said.

Nostalgia is everything junior Grant Berkbigler got when his favorite throwback movie “Caddyshack” entered Netflix on New Year’s Day.

“It’s just a golf movie,” Berkbigler said, “but it’s so funny and a good thing to put on when you’re hanging out with friends.”

Along with “Caddyshack,” Berkbigler recognizes that Netflix is expanding its comedy selection. The list of stand-up shows available on Netflix used to be too small for Berkbigler, but now there is finally a variety of routines for him to watch.

Sadly, along with Netflix’s new arrivals are a large number of films being let go this month. A total of 60 shows will be gone from Netflix within the next 26 days, leaving fans on their own to find alternative streaming methods for their favorite films.

Senior Margaret Rose Halpin is especially distraught over the removal of the 60s classic “Breakfast at Tiffany’s.”

“The fact that I can’t see Audrey Hepburn’s eyebrows anymore is terrible,” Halpin said.

Although the shows leaving Netflix will be missed, Halpin said that she is more excited about how she’s planning to spend her weekends this month.

“There are too many good movies I can’t wait to see,” Halpin said, “I’m ready to binge them all.”
