Frnkiero andthe Cellabration: Stomachaches or Butterflies?

After an unexpected breakup on March 22, 2013, the former members of punk band My Chemical Romance are hard at work on their new music. Frank Iero, the former rhythm guitarist, is the first of the former quartet to release an entire album individually.

Iero has fronted a few bands in the past, including LeATHERMØUTH and Pencey Prep, but they could never quite hold my interest, or even spark it for that matter. Under the new moniker “frnkiero andthe cellabration,” he has managed to do just that.

The album, “Stomachaches,” sounds like a mix of Iero’s own flair and something straight out of the ‘90s, which, if we’re being honest, is the best decade for grungy alternative rock music. Fast paced melodies and thrashing instruments–what could be better than that?

“All songs were written and performed by myself except for the drums on nine of the songs, which were performed amazingly by my friend Jarrod Alexander,” Iero wrote on his website on June 16, announcing the release of the record. Alexander filled in as a drummer on the last stretch of My Chemical Romance tour dates.

Starting off with a little feedback and the beating of drumsticks against one another, “Stomachaches” takes off. “All I want is Nothing,” opens the album with loud, thrashing instruments accompanied by muffled vocals, which carries throughout nearly the entire album.

The songs are able to hold the attention of the listener for the albums duration of around 40 minutes, and at the end, you’re going to want to listen to it over again to fully capture its beauty. Each song sounds different than the last, and the words Iero chants are mesmerizing.

Each song has meaningful lyrics behind it, which most listeners could easily relate to. They tell stories and are more like poetry than anything. The songs are easy to listen to and catchy in their own different ways.

Catch frnkiero andthe cellabration with The Used and Taking Back Sunday at The Pageant in St. Louis on Oct. 6.
