Phobias Affect Students’ Lives

Fear is an emotion relatable to everyone. Your heart starts jumping; you become paralyzed; your head starts racing.

Some fears are deep seated with complex background stories, while others you were simply born with.

This is the case for sophomore Emily Cerkoski. “I’ve always been afraid of spiders,” she said, “It [has] gotten better with age, but I still don’t want to be anywhere near them.”

She claims that her fear of spiders can even sometimes affect her personal life. “If I see even as much as a cobweb in a room I won’t go near it,” she said.

She’s not the only EHS student with a fear so extreme. Senior Austin Chappell says that his fear of heights has kept him grounded (literally) from all too many tourist attractions.

“Vacations are the worst,” Chappell said. “My family will always want to go to the top of a skyscraper, or look over a scenic view, I just can’t do it. My knees start to quake and I feel like I’m losing my balance.”

Arachnids and altitudes aren’t the only factors fear envelopes at EHS. Clowns seem to be a common trend in the “fear department.”

Senior Jake Leshe falls into this group.

“I’ve always been afraid of clowns,” Leshe said. “Everything about them is just terrifying. I don’t see where people find the humor.”

Whether it’s a spider, heights or, ironically, clowns, there are all kinds of things that can produce fear, and affect a person’s life.
