Seniors from the Edwardsville community joined EHS students and district administrators for breakfast April 17, an event intended to update community members on district developments.
“We just wanted to invite [the senior citizens] in and allow them the opportunity to engage with our school district,” public relations and communications coordinator Mary Ann Mitchell said.
District administrators selected students based on their communication skills to share the meal and connect with the senior guests.
“It was really cool to be a part of the senior breakfast,” senior Savannah Jackson said. “Meeting different people from our community was fun.”
Students and seniors spent the first two class periods talking over breakfast and listening to performances by the choir and orchestra. The choir performed “Tomorrow Shall Be My Dancing Day,” “Stopping by Woods” and “Sakkijärven polkka.” The orchestra performed “Brandenburg No. 3” and “Hallelujah.”
“It was fun to play for the senior community members,” senior Paige Muskopf said. “They were very engaged in our performance.”
The seniors said they appreciated the music and liked the event.
“The choir is very good, the breakfast is fantastic and you students are very good and polite,” said George Kern, who attended the event. “I appreciate you [students] enlightening us.”
Other attendees expressed similar enthusiasm.
“[The event] is really great,” Carol Sprankle said. “I see where our tax dollars go; I think it’s a beautiful school and the kids seem nice. The choir was awesome.”
The event was aimed at expanding the district’s connection to the community. Mitchell said the breakfast was designed to foster a stronger, more transparent relationship between the area and the school district.
“The interactions with all the community members were wonderful,” Jackson said. “I really enjoyed helping out and informing people about some developments at our school.”
