The homecoming game at EHS—the single most anticipated sports event of the school year. For most students, they understand what’s going on, their emotions rise and fall with every play, and there’s little confusion as to what is going on; most students except me, that is.
I greet every sports event with a general feeling of, “…what..?” Rarely, if ever, do I know what exactly is going on. The question is, can one still enjoy an event if they’re completely lost every second of it?
I think so.
Homecoming, for me, is a week of festivities, dresses and makeup, preparing for every night with newfound excitement and waking up at five A.M. Friday morning without an intravenous line of coffee in my system. Those of you who know me personally know exactly how big of a deal that is.
The week leading up to Homecoming is a time during the school year when I feel, definitively, that I belong. I normally run in circles that stay under the radar. I don’t participate in many school activities outside of this paper, and I rarely–if ever–find myself on the gym floor, decked out from head to toe in tiger stripes, dancing and yelling like I have gone absolutely crazy. Homecoming, though? Homecoming makes that happen for me.
All other activities aside, the Homecoming Game itself is the epitome of this experience. Regardless of whether or not I know what’s going on, stuff is happening that gets me, and everyone around me, excited.
This year’s game saw the Tigers to a 13-0 win against Belleville West, boosting the excitement in the sports complex to new heights. I might not know why that is important in the long run, but I’m sure going to be on my feet yelling with the rest of my Tigers.
