Over a two-day tournament last weekend, the varsity boys Ultimate team went up against four schools in six matches at the 2026 Indy Invite. They came out with six wins, a total of 74 points and one championship trophy.
Going into the tournament, the team was confident in its skills but expected fierce competition.
“I think we all expected a tough tournament with lots of games from schools we see regularly,” senior cutter Teddy Rayman said. “We went into the weekend as the No. 2 seed, so we all knew we had a good shot at the championship while still being able to play against some good competition.”
The team played against schools from across and beyond the Midwest over the weekend in two stages of long days: pool play and the championship games.
“The tournament was one day of pool play, and then they seed the bracket based on how you did in pool play,” senior cutter Jackson Campbell said. “It’s also a couple of early mornings to get to the field and warm up on time.”
In pool play, EHS won against University School of Nashville and Mounds View High School.
In the tournament, the Tigers bested Parkway Central High School — which beat EHS in the Missouri State Championship finals last year — and Mason High School.
But the team exceeded its own expectations. The Tigers bested each team with a final lead of at least four points and even won 13-0 in their second match against Mounds View.
“The only competitive team was Parkway,” senior cutter Jack Zickus said. “All other teams we basically blew out. The tournament was actually pretty similar to our league play, as we have a bunch of teams that we are much better than, and then there is Parkway, who is the only other comparative team.”
Parkway was the team’s last obstacle standing before the trophy, and while they put up a fight for the title, the Tigers ultimately won 10-8 and were named champions.
“When we won, I was super excited but also honestly just proud of everyone,” senior cutter Micah Finckbone said. “All of the work we put in this season has come to this, and we wouldn’t be anywhere without everyone on the team. Everyone’s got a role, and so that’s why everyone deserves to enjoy this win.”
Campbell agrees and believes the hard work the Tigers have put in this season, as well as their mindset during the invite, helped them perform well.
“We did so much better than the teams there because we did not dwell on losing points or being down in the game,” he said. “We just played the point ahead of us and played our best game. It also stems from how hard we work at practice and the time we put in outside of practice that makes us such a good team.”
Now, the team is looking ahead to its next big tournaments: the Missouri State Championship May 2-3 and the Illinois State Championship May 30.
“Based on the invite, I believe we could rival and dominate any team that is thrown at us at either tournament if we play like we did [at the invite],” Rayman said.
The girls ultimate Frisbee team also participated in the tournament but lost to Holy Family Catholic High School in the first round.
The boys are still reveling in their tournament success and have brought back positive feelings about the entire experience with them.
“Overall, this tournament was super fun,” Finckbone said. “Whether it was the ride up there, the hangouts at the hotel or the actual games, we were out there just having fun and playing the sport we love. I think that’s a big reason why we came out on top at the end of the day.”
