The 2026 Winter Olympics, hosted in Milano Cortina, Italy, are wrapping up this Sunday. After 15 days of competition, let’s see where the U.S. stands in each sport.
Alpine Skiing
Mac Forehand took silver in the FreeSki Big Air finals, having landed a new trick on Run 3. Troy Podmilsak and Konnor Ralph took fourth and fifth place, respectively.
Biathlon
The U.S. finished fifth, marking their best performance in the men’s biathlon relay, however the team didn’t receive any medals.
Bobsleigh
Elena Meyers Taylor won her first gold medal in the monobob after a five-year Olympic history. She’s won two silver and three bronze medals in her previous years, and is the oldest bobsleigh medalist since 1956.
Kaillie Humphries also made it to the podium, earning bronze despite a slower start.
Cross-Country Skiing
Jessie Diggins took bronze in the 10k skate Thursday, becoming the first American to medal in that event.
Curling
The women’s team are tied with Switzerland for second place and the men’s team are tied with Great Britain for fifth place, as of Tuesday. The men have just one game remaining.
Many EHS students said in a survey that curling was their favorite sport to watch.
“The physics are super weird and super cool,” freshman Elliot Huff said.
Figure Skating
In the women’s skate, Alysa Liu earned third place in the short program, returning from a break after becoming the figure skating national champion in 2019 at just 13 years old.
She later earned gold in the single skating event, becoming the first American woman to win gold in that category since 2002.
In the men’s skate, former world champion Ilia Malinin placed eighth in the men’s singles despite high expectations and previous successes in the 2026 games.
An issue many athletes and spectators alike noticed was that almost all the athletes were falling in the same places on the rink, leading many to believe there was something wrong with it (rather than blaming just the athletes for their stumbles).
The scores and placement should, in my opinion, be restated,” freshman Yuna Brittain said. “It was proved that in the skating rink, the ice was soft.”
Freestyle Skiing
Elizabeth Lemley and Jaelin Kauf won gold and silver, respectively, in the women’s freestyle skiing moguls final Feb. 11.
Ice Hockey
On Thursday, the women’s team won gold in an intense game against Canada, where they were able to score the game winning goal after four minutes in overtime.
The men are set to play Slovakia Friday in the semifinals, also having an undefeated run through the games.
There have been several emotional moments for both the players and the spectators.
“[It was so exciting] watching the women get their gold medals with family in the stands, and realizing the sacrifices that they made,” junior Brynn Eder said.
Luge
Ashley Farquharson earned bronze in the women’s luge singles. This win marked just the second time an American has medaled in the event, with the first being by Erin Hamlin in 2014.
Nordic Combined
The Nordic Combined is a blend of cross-country skiing and ski jumping, but the International Olympic Committee is considering dropping it from the games due to low participation and interest.
There isn’t a women’s section, and the men have not placed.
Skeleton
Kelly Curtis placed ninth in the women’s race, and Mystique Ro and Austin Florian took seventh in the first-ever mixed race.
Ski Jumping
The U.S. team finished seventh in the mixed team ski jumping final. Annika Belshaw was the highest finisher for the U.S. team in the women’s normal hill competition, but she was disqualified from the large hill competition because the judges determined her skis were too long.
Ski Mountaineering
This sport is making its Winter Olympics debut this year. Described as a mix of “ascents and descents” by the official website, the sport is a combination of hiking and traditional downhill skiing structured as a relay race.
The events began Thursday, and the U.S. didn’t place.
Snowboard
Chloe Kim earned silver in the snowboard halfpipe, calling it one of her “proudest achievements.” Kim overcame a dislocated shoulder just a month prior, and felt accomplished of her success in overcoming difficulties.
Speed Skating
The men’s team took home silver in the team pursuit event, and the women placed fourth despite high initial expectations.
As of 11 a.m. Friday, the U.S. had 27 total medals, ranking second in the competition.
