EHS girls volleyball won the Lyons Township Tournament this past weekend, continuing their remarkable season.

The Tigers are currently 28-5 and sport the best record in the SW; they have not lost a conference match.

Senior Rachel Pranger has been a cornerstone in the Tigers success this year. She leads the team in kills with 301.

“We’ve come a long way since the beginning of the season,” Pranger said. “Our defense is phenomenal.”

In tournament pool play, the Tigers defeated Fenwick 25-17 and 25-15, Hinsdale Central 25-22 and 25-15, and Libertyville 25-19 and 25-18.

In the semi-finals the Tigers beat Whitney Young 25-22 in both sets. That set the stage for the championship game against Minooka and according to USA Today’s Girls Volleyball Rankings their volleyball team is ranked 27th in the country.

The Tigers showed a superb effort and swept Minooka in two sets, winning 25-22 and 28-26. Pranger said it was a hard-fought battle, but the Tigers came out on top.

“(Beating Minooka) felt great and taught us how to put the ball in small spots and take advantage of their weaknesses,” Rachel Verdun, a senior team leader said.

With the impressive regular season behind them and the previous tournament win under their belt, the girls now look toward state.

They opened up regionals on Tuesday with a two set win against Chatham Glenwood. Edwardsville will now face Quincy Thursday Oct. 26 for the regional championship.

“They really have a tall team but when we watched them we noticed that most of them hit middle back,” Verdun said. “As long as we get our blocks and run quick sets we should be fine.”
