Donald Trump: A Disappointing Time in Office

Sam Lance, Co-editor-and-chief

Eight months. A lot can happen in eight months. You could get an interesting new job, get a solid ACT score or even invite a new life into the world.

Since Inauguration Day back on Jan. 20, Donald Trump has been running our country. His campaign was full of promises like a more stable replacement of healthcare, strengthening the borders and fighting for American jobs.

But here we are eight months later and what has Trump done besides insult American citizens and fire people? It’s been disgraceful.

The Muslim ban not only stopped immigration from majority Muslim countries, but it singled out American citizens who practiced the religion. Green cards from Muslim Americans were declined at borders and families were separated.

According to CNN, a Somalian family was separated by Trump’s travel ban. The family left their daughter behind and when she tried to get to the U.S., she couldn’t.

During Trump’s administration, over nine people have resigned or been fired. Most notably are FBI Director James Comey, Attorney General Sally Yates, National Security Adviser Michael Flynn, and Press Secretary Sean Spicer.

It seems as if Trump fires people who challenge him. Is that what we want our  leader to be like, someone who can’t face criticism?

Comey was fired as the leader in the investigation of Trump’s advisers potentially meddling with Russian officials. Comey challenged our leader and it resulted in him being fired. Didn’t the founding fathers picture America working like so? Challenging our leaders for the good?

In a recent incident, Communications Director Anthony Scaramucci was fired after serving just 10 days. A White House statement released after the incident stated, “… Mr. Scaramucci felt it was best to give chief of staff John Kelley a clean slate and the ability to build his own team.”

I am utterly disappointed in Trump. I’m going to be honest, during the campaign I fell under the spell of the idea that a strong, non-politician could lead us. I didn’t focus on his narcissistic character but on his views of making America great again.

Yet here we are. What has he accomplished? Obamacare has not been repealed, the travel ban has done more harm than good, and the economy has fluctuated since Trump has taken over.

We are now faced with a dysfunctional leader who has made no progress. And we’re only eight months in…only 40 to go!
