Kids These Days

Things just aren’t what they used to be. When I was a kid, we played outside and drank Kool-Aid and were friendly to all of our wonderful neighbors.

It seems as though kids these days are increasingly unaware of how valuable childhood is. The youth are blessed with immaturity, innocence and an energetically fun-loving spirit that sparks creativity and sense of adventure. Where has that gone?

Instead of playing, running and jumping about outside, kids would rather play on the computer or gaming console of their choice. This leaves them connected only by the speed of their internet provider. Games used to only be limited by the infinite expanse of one’s imagination. Instead of going on a bike ride with friends, kids these days pick up a controller and a headset. Instead of taking up fake weapons and playing pirates and Navy Seals, they download the application and chug their favorite cola.

The creativity and excitement of an enjoyable afternoon has been confined to the makers of the games and not the friendships one has. Playing online with friends can be enjoyable, but only to an extent. We are lacking the interpersonal connections we all require.

The ways in which we connect with one another have taken quite a turn in standards. With the number of social networks out there online, we don’t stand a chance of our children finding an unclaimed user name. When you like someone romantically, instead of hoping it gets through the grape vine or courting them, all you need to do is like their status and subscribe to their news feed! Once again, it’s a lack of human connection, or an alteration perhaps. Who needs to meet anyone anywhere? If we can talk online and possibly invite them to be on your team in a multiplayer online game, we’re set!

Whether it’s a date, a social gathering or just some time with friends, remember, there is a whole world waiting to be enjoyed outside of the screen. Don’t take being young for granted, get out there, play games and don’t leave out a child-like sense of wonder, a sense of adventure.
