(Not) Celebrating All Mothers

Mother’s day is finally arriving, but with the seniors last day of school just two days before, do students even care? It’s the one day a year when mom’s get recognized for all their hard work, are they celebrated?

Senior Ricky Lopez doesn’t know why Mother’s Day isn’t celebrated in his household. But what he does know, thankfully, is the name of his mom’s favorite flower.

“I guess we’re just lame,” Lopez said, “I buy her flowers but that’s pretty much it. I used to do a lot more but that was years ago.”

While Lopez’s celebrations have wavered over time, junior Amal Tamari has not.

“If I forgot about Mother’s day she (my mom) would kill me,” Tamari said. “She’d probably even give me the silent treatment if I didn’t give her a present.”

This year, Tamari is gifting her mom yoga lessons since material gifts aren’t especially appreciated in her household.

“I like to think of who gave me this experience while I’m doing the activity,” Tamari’s mother Saundra Tamari said. “Mother’s Day is what keeps me motivated because it shows that I’m appreciated.”

That perspective is lost on Amy Terry who has never celebrated Mother’s Day.

“We don’t even celebrate some of the big holidays,” Terry said. “Besides, my mom’s too busy with her boyfriend by now to want to spend a lame day with me staring at the TV anyway.”

Terry does plan to celebrate graduation with her mom, however, with dinner reservations for the Melting Pot already booked.

“Graduation is just such a huge life event right now,” Terry said. “20 years from now I’m surely not going to celebrate it, just like I don’t celebrate being cut from my mother’s womb 18 years ago.

Mothers are important, but do we really need a day to tell us that?”
