Katy Perry Roars Off Key at Pepsi Halftime Show

Millions heard Katy Perry’s ferocious roar during the Pepsi Halftime Show. And despite her creative entrance riding a huge silver feline, Perry’s performance was disappointing.

The 30-year-old musician opened with her hit song “Roar,” and created a jungle in the stadium with her proud personality and tiger-striped dress.

Yet it was clear from the start that Perry does not have a stage-performing voice. On the radio, Perry spits out a strong, unique voice—the opposite of what I heard during the halftime show. Out of breath, Perry and her small voice didn’t amaze me like Bruno Mars did last year when he closed his performance with a heart-warming acapella version of “Just the Way You Are.”

Instead, Perry used silly background dancers to cover up her excuse for a voice.

While performing “California Gurls” and “Teenage Dream,” Perry sang in a tropical-themed stage with human-sized beach balls and untalented dancing sharks. The set-up was such a mess that the sharks tripped over each other, covering up their wretched choreography. These dancers were no Julliard graduates, but they did make Perry look a little better.

Lenny Kravitz, a 90’s rock star legend, saved Perry in a catchy rock version of “I Kissed a Girl.” Kravitz passionately strummed his electric guitar while Perry foolishly danced around the real talent (Kravitz). After the duet, Kravitz sadly disappeared.

But talent returned with a surprise visit from the Rap Queen, Missy Elliot.

Missy Elliot’s superior rap and dancing skills surpassed Perry as the white no-rhythm California girl attempted to keep up with the fast steps.  Like a first-timer in a Zumba class, Perry stumbled across the stage hopelessly, Missy and her dance crew outshining her.

Katy Perry and her sharks will not go down in Halftime Show history. Her weak voice and choreography couldn’t beat the true legends that walked across the stage before her. After closing her performance with “Fireworks,” it was clear that Lenny Kravitz and Missy Elliot should’ve been the main attraction.
