Another year’s homecoming has come and gone to mixed reviews.
Homecoming returned to the precedent of using stickers as opposed to a digital sign-in system. Last year’s approach created a line of students at the entrance that left some waiting for over half an hour, but the return to the sticker system seemed to fix this problem.
“Stickers just work so much better,” senior and Student Council president Josie Proctor said.
Student opinions on the dance were mixed but overall positive, with survey results averaging 6.8/10.
“This was the best homecoming I’ve ever seen at this school,” senior Elisabeth Preston said.
Despite results reaching a higher average of 7.0/10, the theme was still a divisive topic.
Some students were confused about the execution of the theme. Proctor believes there may have been some ambiguity on what the theme “Take Me to Rio” meant.
“We kind of just wanted to get the fun, colorful vibe from [the “Rio” film series],” Proctor said. “I wouldn’t say we copied the movie, but we copied the vibe of the movie. I do think we could have communicated [the theme] better with the details of the aesthetic we were going for, but I feel like we did a pretty good job.”
Despite mostly positive opinions on the event, the music was not up to the standards of many students. Many attendees had issues with the quality of songs selected by the DJ.
“The music was okay, but it could have been more diverse in genres,” sophomore Aa’Niyah Balwin said. “It was just a whole bunch of the same songs on repeat.”
Other students were upset by the lack of Brazilian music for a theme they felt related so heavily to Brazil.
“No Brazilian music, on the Brazilian theme,” junior Murilo Nobre said. “Are we for real?”
In addition to the music being a downer on the evening, the weather also complicated things. 29% of students felt the weather had negatively impacted their plans for homecoming.
Many students were upset over the lack of places to store umbrellas. Students were not allowed to carry umbrellas indoors and had to leave them outside.
“Bruh, we gotta have some place to put umbrellas,” sophomore Brady Reames said.
Regardless of the issues this year’s homecoming attendees faced, many students still acknowledge all the positive aspects.
“The [homecoming] environment was great,” sophomore Nora Starbuck said. “[The] weather just dampened everyone’s mood a little.”
