After a defeat to Glenwood High, the EHS Tigers are working hard to prevent a repeat.
The Glenwood High School Titans of Chatham pulled an upset win last Friday over the Tigers 39-31, getting revenge for their 14-7 loss from the previous year.
A student section previously abuzz with chatter sobered quickly after Glenwood took an early 7-0 lead. The Titans continued to press this lead for the rest of the game.
Edwardsville retaliated just 13 seconds later with an 80-yard touchdown to even out the game.
The Tigers ended the first quarter losing 13-9 but fired back with a touchdown early in the second quarter to take their only lead of the game.
The first half finished on a close margin, with the Titans leading only 25-24.
The third quarter was a complete shut out for the Tigers as the Titans expanded their lead by another eight points.
The Tigers managed to break through Glenwood’s titanic defense to score late into the fourth quarter to bring the game to 39-31, but it wasn’t enough to secure the win.
The Tigers have been hard at work after their loss, having daily practices through the long weekend. “[The Tigers]’ll come back way stronger,” senior tackle Lucas Kunz said after one of these practices.
Other players share Kunz’s sentiment. “We’re trying to put more effort this week … so we just come back harder,” senior wide receiver Eric Smith said.
The players aren’t the only ones changing things up, though. Head coach Kelsey Pickering is focusing on the mistakes made on Friday and helping the players understand how to overcome them.
Part of this focus has involved watching game footage and practicing stages of the game where he sees room for improvement.“I think it all starts with how we practice,” Pickering said.
