After 2,380 days of waiting, video game developers Team Cherry have announced the official release date for “Hollow Knight: Silksong.”
After over six years of waiting, “Hollow Knight: Silksong” has been confirmed to release on September 4, 2025 at 9:30 a.m. CDT. It has been confirmed by Team Cherry that it will be released on several platforms across PC and consoles.
Team Cherry is a three-person team from Adelaide, Australia best known for the critically acclaimed game “Hollow Knight,” which was released in 2017 and received several free updates through 2018. The game was met with widespread praise upon release and received a score of 90 on Metacritic.
“I enjoyed [“Hollow Knight’s”] excellent movement abilities to navigate these completely alien areas,” junior Owen Zuercher said. “The mechanics, level design, and art style combined to create a really amazing sense of discovery.”
“Hollow Knight: Silksong” was originally going to be a free update for Hollow Knight, but due to the expanding scope of the update it was announced to become its own game in February of 2019. Team Cherry describes “Silksong” as “the epic sequel to ‘Hollow Knight.’”
“Hollow Knight: Silksong” was first playable as a demo at Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in 2019 at the Nintendo booth and was met with critical praise. After a games broadcast featuring new footage of “Silksong” on June 12, 2022, the Xbox official account on X (formerly known as Twitter) said that all games featured in the showcase would be releasing within 12 months, and clarified that the statement applied to “Silksong.” It did not.
On May 10, 2023, Team Cherry marketing director Matthew Griffin announced on X that the game was delayed, stating “We had planned to release in the first half of 2023, but development is still continuing.”
Radio silence was maintained until April 2, 2025, when the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct showcased nine new seconds of gameplay and gave a release date of 2025.
On June 8, the reveal trailer for the new ROG Xbox Ally featured “Silksong” front and center. It was later stated that all games shown off in the ROG Ally trailer would be playable on the console on its holiday release.
Xbox announced on July 28 that the ROG Ally showcase booth at the Gamescom event in Cologne, Germany would feature a “Silksong” demo, with Nintendo of Germany confirming the game would also be playable at the Nintendo booth on August 7. This was after it was announced on May 1 that “Silksong” would appear at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) Game Worlds showcase with a playable demo alongside of the several assets used in “Silksong.”
Team Cherry broke their habit of having their news delivered through other companies by announcing that a “special announcement” would take place on August 21. Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier also announced an interview with developers Ari Gibson and William Pellen that would be released the same day.
During the morning hours of August 21, viewers tuned in to this announcement to find what they had been waiting for for so long: a release date. Only a fortnight away, September 4 was far sooner than many people had anticipated.
“Silksong’s” short turnaround from radio silence to release date has blindsided several consumers who are now unable to save up enough money to buy the game on release date.
“If I had the money for [buying “Silksong” day one], I would,” senior Xander Lawrence said. “However, I haven’t been thinking about setting aside money to buy it at release because I did not know when it would release until fairly recently.”
