’90s Trends Are Chic Again

The Bible proclaims that there’s nothing new under the sun, and with the latest fashion trends, that certainly seems to be the case.

The 1990s was a quote-on-quote “eclectic” period according to The Guardian—an era of chokers, slip dresses, velvet, grunge, plaid, the mini skirt and a host of other styles.

The “Rachel” haircut was popularized from “Friends;” Alicia Silverstone of “Clueless” founded the preppy look: a plaid suit jacket with matching mini skirt; and the infamous slip dress was made famous by movies like “10 Things I Hate About You.”

In recent fashion, most—if not all—of these trends have seen a resurgence.

Senior Amal Tamari attributes the development to pop culture.

“A lot of shows and movies have come out recently that appear to have taken place in the ‘80s and ‘90s,” she said.  “This could be a reason the styles from these decades are reappearing.”

Tamari likes comfortable clothes and vintage styles.

“I mostly wear sweater and sneakers,” she said.

Senior Sophie Gianaris is willing to sacrifice comfort for beauty.  She describes her style as a mixture of classic pieces and modern trends.  The ‘90s grunge look appeals to her.

“Doc Martins are always a staple (of fashion) and they never go out of style,” she said.  “(I love that these trends have come back) because I always have clothes in my closet that remain in style.”

Gianaris loves fashion as a whole and appreciates how it allows her to be unique.

“I believe the best thing about fashion is the creativeness that comes into fashion and also being able (to) express your personality and yourself.”
