Student Council Shows Support for Hurricane Victims

From couch raffles to Chick-Fil-A parties, Student Council has created a wide variety of opportunities for students to help the victims of hurricanes Harvey and Irma.

After over a week of collecting donations, Student Council has named a winner of the Hurricane Harvey relief contest within sixth hour classes.  Mrs. Heap and her sixth hour child development class raised the most money to help the victims of the hurricanes that hit late August.

Along with collecting donations from sixth hour classes, Student Council has been holding a raffle. Those who donate could win an opportunity to sit on a couch at the end zone during the home football games.

A new winner is chosen before each home game, and provided Imo’s pizza for themselves and three friends they choose to enjoy the experience with them.

With all of the fundraisers, the district has raised over $14,000 for the victims of the hurricanes.

“All of the money went to the Red Cross, and they will distribute it from there,” Mrs. Beck said about where the money collected will go.

These two opportunities to donate were set up by Student Council within a matter of days after Harvey. The group was ready to do whatever they could to help the victims of the disasters.

“Student Council, among everyone else, heard about Hurricane Harvey and we wanted to help out in any way we could,” said Student Council member Morgan Swanner.  “We decided to have a fundraiser to collect money to give to the Red Cross for damages and relief for the hurricane.”

Members of Student Council are grateful for the participation of fellow students and donations they have received.  Swanner feels that the school has done an excellent job of supporting the victims.

“It is a great feeling that we have helped out by raising money to help those in need.”
