Boys Swim Earns Unexpected Win Over SHS

Springfield High School has typically beaten EHS in the past, but Jan. 28 was different. It was the Tiger’s senior night, and the atmosphere in the Chuck Fruit Aquatic Center was dynamic.

The meet began with SHS in the lead, but EHS was able to turn it around to come out on top.

Senior Callista Poiter went to the meet to support the team, though she admitted she hadn’t expected a win for Edwardsville.

“Winning by such a close margin really intensified the atmosphere afterward,” she said. “The air was electric.”

Swimmer and senior Spencer Sholl also thought the atmosphere was more positive than usual throughout the entire meet.

“It was our team’s energy and enthusiasm that helped us to win,” senior Spencer Sholl said. “It had been a dream of ours since the team started, and we had no idea that we would be able to compete against Springfield three years ago.”

Sholl also accredits the win to the closeness of the swimmers this year.

“We knew they were good, but we knew we were good too,” senior Chris McCartney said.

McCartney—who has solely played football throughout high school—was looking for a way to stay active during offseason and joined the swim team this year.

Junior Robbie Brown hopes to make his senior night next year just as memorable.

“We wanted it and we worked for it.”
