Boys Soccer Looks Strong in Possible Repeat for State Title

After defeating Quincy Saturday and O’Fallon Tuesday, Tigers move on to face Normal Community High Nov. 1 for the Sectional Championship.

In a battle for the regional title, EHS faced off against Quincy, and for the third year in a row, they pulled off a win.

“It’s a feat that I think our program has to be proud of because Quincy has a very excellent program,” head coach Mark Heiderscheid said. “They’re always highly rated in the state.”

Heiderscheid also said that it’s unfortunate that Quincy has to play against us each year; they’d be really successful in the sectional game.

Senior Drew Flaugher gave the Tigers an early lead with a goal in the 21st minute off of a misplayed ball by the Quincy keeper.

In the second half, sophomore Mohammad Hamad beat three defenders to score in the 51st minute to make the game 2-0, and with a corner kick from senior Suleman Bazai, senior Liam Burke bumped the score up to three in the 66th minute, while Quincy still lagged behind.

At one point, it looked as if Quincy had tied the game 1-1, but a foul call prevented the goal from counting. Even with abusive language from Quincy fans throughout the game, the Tigers held their heads high.

“It got us fired up, made us want to win more and prove them wrong,” senior Andrew Mullican said.

In the sectional semi-final the Tigers With a goal in the first half and two in the second, defeated O’Fallon by another score of 3-0.

“It was a lot tougher than what 3-0 is, it was a tough environment,” Heiderscheid said. “They made it very, very challenging for us and there were moments where we were struggling just with the physical nature of the game and the fact that we couldn’t, on a shorter field, get the game settled.”

Despite these woes, the Tigers prevailed. The first goal of the game by senior Landon Paul came in the 12th minute, followed by two Tiger headers, one by Flaugher in the 57th minute and the other by Paul in the 69th minute, his second of the game, to clinch the victory for the Tigers.

“It was good to get that goal and contribute to the team,” Flaugher said.

The Tigers will face Normal Community High (20-0-2), who defeated the Tigers in a closely contested 1-0 match back on Sept. 27, for the sectional championship at 1 p.m.

“I think there’s certainly enough time between [games] to be rejuvenated and then play. Perhaps [we have a] slight advantage in that we’ve got a number of players that have been through this process before, so you understand how the tournament goes, you have a better idea of how to navigate and get through games,” Heiderscheid said.
