Have the ‘Nerve’ to See These Summer Movies?

Every summer, the movie theater is packed with tons of people and a wide variety of new movies. Summer 2016 contained many mixed reviews, but three movies stood above the rest.

The highly anticipated “Suicide Squad” received many negative reviews from die-hard comic book fans. For someone who doesn’t read the comics, the movie was quite enjoyable and entertaining.

One actor that stood out was Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. She was able to get into the twisted side of the character while also showing, in flashbacks, how normal she once was. The character’s dark past was clearly developed and the twisted sense of humor she portrayed lit up the screen. Robbie is rumored to be getting her own movie, and she clearly deserves it.

The soundtrack of “Suicide Squad” includes tons of classic hits from the ‘80s as well as some brand new songs created for the movie. “Heathens” by twenty one pilots was leaked early, creating even more excitement for the movie.

Another standout was Panic! at the Disco’s cover of “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen. Nothing will ever top Freddie Mercury, but lead singer Brendon Urie comes pretty close with his distinct vibrato and his beautiful falsetto.

“Me Before You” was based on a contemporary teen novel by Jojo Moyes. It contained a lot of pre-release hype on social media, and it lived up to its expectations of a sweet, yet horribly tear-jerking, love story.

The acting was phenomenal and the scenery was beautiful, but the problem was within the morals of the story. Many people know that “Me Before You” deals with a paraplegic who is planning to use assisted suicide, which is a very controversial topic that several disagree with. Despite the controversy, it was an entertaining movie full of laughs and tears.

The movie “Nerve” featured young actors Emma Roberts and Dave Franco and a game of “truth or dare without the truth” that would risk their lives. The role of Venus (Roberts) was seemingly relatable to the average teenage girl who wouldn’t mind staying in for some Netflix over going to a party.

The soundtrack was loaded with the latest alternative hits such as “Soap” by Melanie Martinez and “Hurricane” by Halsey. These songs, along with many others, fit with the dark scenery of the movie while still keeping it upbeat.

“Nerve” kept you on the edge of your seat. It wasn’t predictable and it kept you guessing what was coming next. Between the suspense, music and fresh characters, “Nerve” was one of the most interesting movies of the summer.
